Traumatic Brain Injury

Understanding TBI

Our brains are our most precious commodity. Our brains, along with our souls, are what distinguishes us from the animal world, and our brains are responsible for far more than we know and understand.

An impairment in our brain is similar to a computer malfunction, only there is no Microsoft Technician or Apple Genius Bar appointment that can be used to fix the malfunction. Instead, an injured brain is left to try and repair itself. Imagine a computer trying to fix software glitches with the same software that has the glitch. As you can imagine, the results of such an experiment would be devastating.

Over 1.7 million traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) occur each year in the United States. TBIs occur when the brain is jolted against an object or against the skull resulting in trauma. Imagine placing a raw egg or tomato in a glass jar, then shaking the jar. The ensuing mayhem of the tomato or egg being thrown against the jar result in salsa or scrambled eggs. The situation is similar when your head is thrown about in a collision. The brain shakes around inside the skull often times hitting the inside of the skull causing bruising, swelling and even brain damage. The damage to the brain then manifests itself through one's thoughts, actions, emotions, etc, and the results are often times life-changing.

When brain injuries occur, friends or family members of the injured person are left to pick up the pieces or hold it all together while trying to figure out what's wrong with the person they care for. Frustration sets in, and life becomes difficult for all involved. Knowing the signs and symptoms of a brain injury can help you find the assistance you need to get life back on track.

Symptoms include:

Headaches, nausea, vomiting, loss of balance, memory problems, issues with concentration, emotional instability, mood swings, seizures, slurred speech, confusion, weakness in one's extremities, etc. Consult a doctor immediately if you have been involved in a traumatic event in which your head was injured. Seeking medical treatment right away is vital. Without immediate treatment, these types of injuries can become permanent.

With medical treatment come medical bills, rehabilitation expenses, and possibly the inability to work and earn a living. Brain injuries also create situations ripe for exploitation by con artists and other folks looking to take advantage of a brain injured person. If the brain injury was the result of someone else's conduct, then having an advocate in your corner to fight to protect the injured person's rights is critical.
